One weekend in São Paulo - Brazil

Hello everyone!!

Are you travelling by business or do you have quick time in São Paulo? Do you have just one weekend for visit this big city? Wooow...ok...don't worry I'll help you with some tips. São Paulo is the biggest city in Brazil then I'll talk about the main sights. Here we go!!

IBIRAPUERA PARK

Ride a bike: you can rent a bike in the Park. The best day to visit Ibirapuera Park is Saturday (or weekdays if you have free time), because on Sundays it's really crowded!

Planetarium: you should buy your tickets at least one week in advance, because the Planetarium receives many visitors everyday.

PAULISTA AVENUE

This avenue is great during the days or after hours!

Following some good places at Avenida Paulista:

Trianon Park - It's next to Trianon-Masp subway station. You can't ride a bike at Trianon Park, just walk is allowed. It's a good park on Paulista's heart.

House of breads: I love Bella Paulista Casa de Pães. They have takeaway or dine in options, however on Fridays and Saturdays nights, you need to be patient, because probably Bella Paulista will be crowded. 

Masp Gallerie: This place has a temporary expositions. Check on its website for more information and open hours.

Avenida Paulista has cycleway and some bike points by Bradesco and Itau Bank. You can rent a bike with ordinary credit cards.

Calçadão Urbanóide (Food Trucks): It is next to Trianon-Masp subway station as well. They are open 12pm until 10pm, however they are closed on Mondays!

Gastronomy

São Paulo has lot of restaurant options. I usually check the best places and plates at Comer & Beber magazine, but you can go in these places that I know:

Burger: I've visited some burger houses, but in my opinion the best Gourmet Burger is Zé do Hambúrguer. They have some sandwich options, however I recommend that you order it with green special mayo, it's so delicious!  

Other burger house options: Cadillac Burguer (nice ambiance), Johnny Rockets (traditional American burgers), Madero (if you go there, try palmito assado, it's really yummy), General Prime Burguer (they have good plates, but the milk shake menu are the best. I love the Nutella Milk Shake!!), Hamburguinho (since 1974, it's a modest place, however they have really good burgers. Do you remember about the green mayo that I've told you? They have the same mayo but this one with garlic. To be honest, I don't know witch one is better! LOL. 

Indian food: Tandoor.  They have a small menu, but it's good enough. 

Thay food: Namga. São Paulo has few options regarding Thay food. How about the food? Well, the food smell so good and yummy.

Pizzas: ahhhhh.... São Paulo and its pizzas!!! Let me tell you the top 3 pizzas in São Paulo: 

1º - Quintal do Bráz: good pizzas and nice ambience.

2º - Veridiana Pizza: yummy pizzas, expensive menu, lovely place and large queues.

3º - Padaria Estoril (Moóca region): Well, of course that I like a good and charmy place, but this modest bakery has some delicious pizza. You can eat in or takeaway. They sell whole pizza or just a slice. Fresh and warm pizzas all day...huuum...stop it!! I'm hungry already!!!

Barraca do Zé (Açaí): have you ever tried açaí? Believe me, you will like it (I hope..hahaha). Try açaí na tijela (açaí bowl). It looks like smooth ice cream. I've eaten it with banana, granola (muesli) and leite condensado (condensed milk). YUMMYYYYY!!!  

Bars: if you don't care about crowded place, go to Veloso Bar, they make traditional brazilian caipirinha (mix vodka and fruit). If you prefer beer, go to Bar Brahma.  Tip - the best Bar Brahma branch stays in São João Ave., corner with Ipiranga Ave. (these are the most famous streets in São Paulo Center). Brazil hasn't strict alcohol drinking rules. You can drink it everywhere and every time. You just need to be eighteen or above to buy beer. You can't drive if you are high, then take a taxi, subway or bus in these conditions.  

Steak House: the most popular steak house in São Paulo is Fogo de Chão. Well, somebody can disagree with me, but it isn't the best steak house in my opinion. I like Vento Haragano too. Another one that I like is Jardineira, but it's little bit more expensive. 

Would you like to make a happy hour? Then, go to Bar do Juarez (visit the one that stays next to Faria Lima Ave.) or you can go to Outback Steak House (São Paulo has lot of Outback branches). 

Pastel (snack): at Mercado Municipal de São Paulo, called "Mercadão", you'll find the famous "pastel" in market fairs. It looks like a stuffed fried pasta. They have big menu options! Are you a fit person? Good, but in São Paulo you will get fat LOL. Are you hungry yet? OMG, go to Hocca bar at Mercadão too, and order a "lanche de mortadela"  (mortadella sandwich). Stop here, if you eat something else, you will explode LOL.


Sweets: Have you ever heard about Cold Stone Creamery? Do you like Ice Cream? Then, go to Cold Stone now!!! Another good ice creamery is Freddo (from Argentine), obviously that the most popular Freddo's ice cream is dulce de leche flavor. 

ZOO

It isn't good in summer days, because probably it'll be hot and a dry weather. The day will turn tiring and the animals are will be lying and quiet. It's better on Spring and Autumn. 







Well, I think it's good enough for one weekend in São Paulo. Enjoy it!! ;)

Você já esteve no Rio de Janeiro - Brasil?

Oi galera!!

Hoje eu vou falar um pouquinho sobre o Rio de Janeiro (Brasil).

Bem, o Rio de Janeiro é chamado de "cidade maravilhosa" e eu concordo, pois a cidade é realmente linda, porem voce precisa saber algumas dicas como: onde você pode ir, transportes e preços.

I estive no Rio de Janeiro em apenas um fim de semana e eu acho que é tempo suficiente para ver as principais atrações.


- Morro do Pão de Açúcar

Você consegue uma otima foto indo no Botafogo Praia Shopping. Esse shopping tem uma varanda toda aberta, com restaurante. Alem de tirar uma bela foto, você ainda pode tomar um cafe, ou almoçar por la. Esta praia, de frente pro Shopping, não é legal então não recomento que você vá nela, pois é suja e não é muito segura também.

- Bondinho

O Bondinho é bem caro (R$70), mas é um passeio muito bonito e um dos pricipais do Rio. Pegue o Bondinho na Praia Vermelha. A primeira parada será no Morro da Urca. 

Dica: eu peguei um helicóptero neste ponto. Ele é bem caro, mas vale a pena!!! O vôo custa no mínimo R$250 por pessoa. Durante o vôo você vai conseguir ver o Cristo Redentor, Praia Vermelha, Pão de Açúcar e as Parias de Copacabana, Ipanema  e Leblon.  

Depois desta parada, Morro da Urca, pegue novamente o Bondinho e siga para o Pão de Açúcar. Veja este link que interessante:

-  Praias de Copacabana and Ipanema 


Estas praias são as mais populares no Rio de Janeiro. Você pode alugar uma bicicleta, caminhar, correr, ou apenas curtir essas duas praias. 

Se você quiser alugar uma bicicleta, há diversos pontos de locação do Itaú na avenida principal (Av. Atlanta).

Atenção: ande de bicicleta somente na ciclo faixa, isso sera mais seguro pra você.

- Cristo Redentor 

Pegue o trenzinho que sobe para o Corcovado. Ele custa em torno de R$60 por pessoa. O trenzinho para o Cristo, sai da Rua Smith de Vasconcelos, nº 27.

O Rio de Janeiro tem trilhas para você subir no Pão de Açúcar e no Corcovado, sem usar o Bondinho e o Trenzinho, mas eu não recomendo pois vai levar bem mais tempo e pode não ser seguro.


Acomodações:

O Hotel Ibis é uma boa opção, pois não é dos mais caros, está incluso café da manhã na diária e fica em uma boa localização.

Dicas importantes:

Use taxi e não alugue carro, pois o Rio não é muito fácil e seguro para você sair andando sem saber por onde ir. Nem sonhe em usar o aplicativo Waze, porque ele pode te levar para os morros, onde a comunidade restringe os acessos, e você vai entrar em apuros! Quem é do Rio, sabe onde pode andar, então, você não sendo nativo, preze pelo taxi!!!

Evite andar sozinho de noite. Não use relógios, jóias e não ande com muito dinheiro. Tenha cuidado com seu celular e câmera.

Ouvimos falar sempre sobre os Bailes Funks. Eu odeio funk e nunca estive nestas "baladas". Se você não estiver com um amigo do próprio Rio e que conheça muito bem, nem se arrisque a ir para essas festas! Eu não iria nem com um conhecido!

Nunca deixe suas coisas sozinhas na areia, nem mesmo as bicicletas alugadas, pois quando você voltar, certamente não estarão mais lá!

Qual a melhor época para ir para o Rio de Janeiro?

A melhor época é entre novembro e fevereiro, porque é verão e você com certeza vai pegar um calorzão daqueles, entre 35ºc e 40ºc.

Today I'll talk a little bit about Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). I'm living in Wellington - New Zealand, and sometimes someone ask me about Rio de Janeiro.

Well, in my country, Rio de Janeiro is called "wonderful city". I agree with this "nickname", because this city is really beautiful, however you need to know important tips how: where can you go, transports, prices...

I visited Rio de Janeiro in one weekend, I think it was time enough for to see the main attractions.

- Morro do Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain):

You'll take a good Sugarloaf Mountain's picture from Botafogo Praia Shopping. This Mall has an open balcony/restaurant. Take a coffee or lunch and enjoy it. This beach, in front off the Mall, is awful, the seashore is disgusting, dirty and not safe!

- Bondinho (cable car):

The cable car is really expensive ($20 per person), but you need to give a try. Take it in Praia Vermelha (Red Beach). The scene is nice and it's the most important attraction in Rio de Janeiro. The first stop is Morro da Urca. Take off in this point, enjoy!

Tip: I took a helicopter in this point. It's expensive too, but it worths! The flight costs at least $77 per person. You will see the best Rio de Janeiro's places: Christ the Redeemer, Praia Vermelha (Red Beach), Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain), Copacabana Beach,  Ipanema Beach and Leblon Beach. 

After Morro da Urca, take the cable car again and go to the Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain). Look this link above, it's interesting:

-  Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches


These beaches are the most popular in Rio de Janeiro. You can ride a bike, walk, run or just enjoy the nice beaches. In Brazil, you can drink a beer in the beach. If you like vodca, you should try "Caipirinha", it's the vodca mixed with fruit (lime, strawberry, kiwi or passion fruit), it's really tastes good.

If you want to rent a bike, you will see some points with orange bikes by Itau Bank on the main street (Atlanta Ave). 

Pay attention: ride a bike just in the bike lanes, it's safer for you.

- Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer - Statue)

Take the Corcovado Train and go to the up hill. It's costs around $15 per person. Take notes of the address: Rua Smith de Vasconcelos, number 27.

Rio de Janeiro has some hiking trails in Christ Statue and Sugarloaf Mountain, but I don't recommend it, because you can have a problems with pickpockets and if you need some information or help the people don't speak English.


Accommodations:

Book a room in Ibis Hotel. They have good prices, with breakfast included and they are located in a good location. Brazil doesn't have good hostels (we call it "Albergue") therefore I don't recommend it.

Gold tips:

Take a taxi, and don't rent a car. Rio de Janeiro isn't safe for it. This city has a lot of "favelas" (slums - poor/danger locations) and if you walk into some "favela", Gosh, I don't know what can happen to you :(

Avoid walk alone in the night. Don't use watches, jewelry nor carry lot of money. Be careful with your camera and mobile phone!

Sometimes people talk about Funk Party. I've never been there, it can be dreadful. I hate funk, and these places are hazard areas! Please, take care!!!

Don't leave your belongs (or rental bike) alone! Never!  Did you understand me? Never! Rio de Janeiro has a lot of pickpockets! 

What's the best season to visit Rio de Janeiro?

The best season to visit Rio de Janeiro is between November and February, because it's Summer. During the Summer, Rio de Janeiro gets hot (between 35ºC and 40ºC).

The next post I'll post about Ilha Grande (Big Island). This island is located in Rio de Janeiro too, but you need more days for this travel (at least 2 days).

Dezembro - A melhor época na Nova Zelândia para viajar para Nelson (Ilha Sul)!

Na última semana eu estive em Nelson com meu marido. Eu acho que a semana entre os dias 25/12 e 30/12 foram os melhores dias de verão, porque nos tivemos sol, temperatura agradável e sem vento!

Bem, eu vou descrever pra você meus 4 dias em Nelson, dia a dia. Se você não tem muito tempo para caminhar, você pode usar minhas sugestões abaixo. Eu recomendo que você fique na região de Takaka, porque a região de Nelson fica um pouco longe e você vai precisar dirigir todos os dias para Abel Tasman. A distância entre o centro de Nelson e as praias de Tasman, são de 80km em média. Porém vale a pena visitar a praia de Nelson (perto do Porto), ela é bem bonita. 

Antes de ir a Nelson, cheque a tábua da maré, porque quando a maré esta alta, as praias ficam mais bonitas!

1º dia: Kaiteriteri

Eu usei o Aqua Taxi que sai de Marahau. Muitas pessoas costumam ir caminhando para as praias, porque Marahau possui trilhas e camping, mas eu tinha apenas 4 dias para visitar a região, então optamos pelo barco para agilizarmos.

Para os passeios de barco, você precisa agendar um dia antes pelo telefone, ou no escritório deles em Marahau/ Kaiteriteri. Eu gostei muito de Kaiteriteri, porque quando chegamos a maré estava bem cheia, no meio do dia a maré começou a baixar e nos vimos os bancos de areia surgirem..foi uma experiência fantástica!

2º dia: Torrent Bay

Quando nos descemos em Torrent Bay, nós vimos o oposto de Kaiteriteri..em torno das 10hs, o mar começou a subir e cobrir os bancos de areia existentes! A maré sobe em media 5 metros e quando baixa, recolhe uns 2km...vira tudo lama e nem é possível mais ver onde esta o mar!!

Na volta, o Aqua Taxi nos pegou em Anchorage Beach, ela fica perto de Torrent Bay. Se você chegar lá com a maré baixa, você vai andar apenas 1.6km para chegar em Anchorage, porém se a maré já estiver alta ou subindo, você vai precisar usar a trilha de 4km. 

Neste mesmo dia, nos fomos até a Cleopatra's Pool, mas eu achei uma cachoeira normal...se estiver cansado, eu penso que não vale a pena..

Dica: lembre-se de agendar o Aqua Taxi um dia antes, seja pelo telefone, internet ou no escritório. O Aqua Taxi leva você para as praias e te busca após 5 ou 6 horas depois (os horários de partida/ retorno serão combinados com você).

3º dia: Puponga

Eu andei muito neste dia. Não recomendo, mas se você quer ver dunas, lá vai ter aos montes. Se tiver sorte, é possível ver baleia, mas eu não vi nenhuma :/ Vi apenas dunas e mais dunas e alguns ossos (cabeça) de animais na areia...

No mesmo dia, nos fomos até o Harwood’s Hole, este lugar não é seguro para crianças. Você vai ver apenas uma parte do buraco, pois ele é imenso (357 metros), penso que talvez seja bem mais interessante para pessoas que escalam por ele, porque apenas olhar pelas pedras, não dá pra ver muita coisa...até tiramos uma foto, mas não da pra entender nada, então nem coloquei aqui pra vocês.

4º dia: Nelson Lakes National Park

No último dia, nos fomos ao Nelson Lakes, lá é possível fazer churrasco (se você tiver equipamento), nadar, usar um  caiaque, ou apenas tirar uma bela foto...

Depois deste lago, de tarde, você pode ir até a praia de Nelson (Tahunanui), mas veja se a maré estará cheia, porque se estiver baixa, você não vai ver nada, apenas lama...

O centro de Nelson é bem legal para comer, passear e fazer compras. Eu escuto falar bastante de uma sorveteria chamada Penguino, mas eu não cheguei a ir lá.

Dica: leve comida e bebida para todos os passeios, pois nas praias não há onde comprar nada.

Meu irmão esteve em Nelson no ano passado, mas ele foi para fazer trilha de 10km por dia (ele andou toda a região do Abel Tasman), acampava e tal..nesta região eles tem ótima estrutura para isso!

Nelson possui muitas formas de conhecê-la, então escolha a que melhor se encaixa com você e curta muito, pois é realmente lindo!

December - The best season in New Zealand for travel to Nelson (South Island)!!

Last week, I went to Nelson with my husband. I think that the week between 25th – 30th was the best Summer’s days, because we had a nice time with sun, without winds and warm weather.

Well... I’ll describe to you my 4 days in Nelson day by day. If you don’t have a lot of time for hiking, you can use my suggestions below. I recommend you to stay around in Takaka, because the Nelson’s region is so far the beaches and you will need to drive a lot every day... I‘ve stayed in Nelson, but it didn’t work so good for me, because the distance between Nelson and Tasman’s beaches are 80km. However, it worth a visit to the Nelson’s beach (around the Port), it’s really beautiful. When you think about going to Nelson, check the tide table. If you want to get the best scenary, plan to go when the tide is high.

1st day: Kaiteriteri

I took the Aqua Taxi from Marahau. Many people use to tramp, because Marahau has tracks and campings, but I had just 4 days for visit the region. You should book the trip one day in advance by phone or in the office in Marahau/Kaiteriteri. In my opinion, this beach is the most beautiful in Nelson. The tide was high in the morning but in the afternoon we could see the tide lowering. It was a fantastic experience, when we saw the sand banks showing!

2nd day: Torrent Bay

When we arrived in Torrent Bay, the tide was low, and we saw the opposite from Kaiteriteri Beach... around 10am, the tide started to get high and covered all sand banks (the tide rises 5 meters and when it is low the beach draws back about 2km!).

The Aqua Taxi picked me up in Anchorage, it’s next to Torrent Bay. If you go in low tide, you will walk just 1.6km between Torrent Bay and Anchorage Bay, however, in the high tide, you will walk about 4km, because you should use the trail. In this day we went to the Cleopatra's Pool, but it is a normal waterfall for me... if you are tired it won’t worth.

Tip: remember for book Aqua Taxi one day in advance, you need to book it online, by phone or in the office in Marahau! The Aqua Taxi leaves you in the beaches and returns to pick you up 5 or 6 hours later (you book both arrival and departure with them).

3rd day: Puponga

I walked a lot in this day. I don’t recommend it, however, if you want to see a dune, there are a lot of them. If you get lucky, you can see a whale in the beach, but I didn’t see it. I just saw dunes and more dunes and I found sea animal’s bones in the sand...

In the same day we went to Harwood’s Hole, it’s not recommended for children. There you can see just a portion of the hole. It’s a huge hole (357 metres), but perhaps it's better for a climber, because you won’t see anything from there…I took a picture, but it is not good...

4th day: Nelson Lakes National Park


The last day, we went to the Nelson Lakes, there you can do a barbecue (if you have equipment), swim in the lake, use a kayak or just take a nice picture.

In the afternoon, you can go to the Nelson's beach (Tahunanui). But, check the tide in this beach, because the tide needs to be high.

The Nelson's Centre is good for eating, shopping or just sightseeing. I’ve heard good opinions about the Penguino Gelato Ice Cream, but I didn't go there.

Tip: You should mind about foods and beverages, because in the beaches don’t have bars or restaurants!

My brother went to Nelson last year, but he tramped. He told me that he walked over 10km per day and he slept in his tent.

Nelson has many options for sightseeing, and you can enjoy it as you wish :)

What about the Southward Car Museum?

The last weekend I went to Southward Car Museum in Kapiti Coast (New Zealand). It's a big museum where you can find several classic cars. 
Sr. Len Southward and his wife Lady Vera Southward began collecting car in 1956. Some cars were bought and others donated, such as the Tata Nano Car.


The ticket costs $17 for each adult and children (5-15 yrs) $3. I think it's worth, because they have a great collection and you can take some good pictures.

There, you can see a lot of old and young cars. The museum has over 400 vehicles, and various other exhibits including aircrafts, bicycles, motorcycles.

Among the most popular are Cadillac, Corvette, 1972 Fiat 500, Cooper MK5, although the best car in my opinion is the Shelby Mustang! :)

Perhaps, you' ll need to plan the visit, because it's a little bit complicated. I went with my car (I live in Hutt Valley, Wellington), but if you don't have a car, you need to be patient and use the train and bus. The place is far from the Paraparaumu Station and you will need to take the bus Paraparaumu Beach.

Despite of distance, I recommend you to visit the Southward Museum, because you will have a excellent experience.

O que falar sobre Southward Car Museum?

Na última semana eu estive no Southward Car Museum no Kapiti Coast (Nova Zelandia). Este é um grande museu, com uma coleção de carros particulares. O Sr. Len Southward e sua esposa Lady Vera Southward começaram a colecionar os carros em 1956. Alguns carros foram comprados pelos mesmos e outros doados, como o Tata Nano Car.

O ingresso custa 17 dólares para adultos e crianças (5-15 anos) pagam 3 dólares. Eu penso que vale a pena, porque eles têm uma boa coleção de carros e você pode tirar boas fotos. 

Lá, você vai encontrar carros velhos e carros mais novos. O museu tem mais de 400 veículos, e várias outras exibições incluido aviões, bicicletas, motos.

Entre os mais populares estão o Cadillac, Corvette, 1972 Fiat 500, Cooper MK5, porém, na minha opinião, o melhor carro é o Shelby! :)

Talvez, você precise planejar sua visita, porque para chegar é um pouco complicado. Eu fui com o meu carro (eu moro no Hutt Valley, Wellington), mas se você não tem um carro, você vai precisar ser paciente eu usar o trem e ônibus. O museu fica um pouco longe da estação Paraparaumu e precisa pegar um ônibus para "Paraparaumu Beach".

Apesar da distância, eu recomendo que você vá no Southward Museum, porque você vai ter uma excelente experiência.

Have you ever been to Campos do Jordão city (Brazil)?

The best season for visit Campos do Jordão is the Winter, but if you are going in the Summer, that's ok, it will be a nice trip.

Campos do Jordão is a romantic city, although it has a lot of adventure activities. The city is in São Paulo state, about 106 miles from central city.

If you like a fondue and hot chocolate you will love Campos do Jordão.

This city is not cheap, so I recommend just one weekend, it's enough to get to know it. 

Well, I will tell you about the delicious food in Campos do Jordão:

Baden Baden Restaurant: do you like gourmet beer? This is the place! The Baden Baden is a wheat beer, made in Brazil, and I, particularly, really like it. Regarding the food, I recommend two dishes: “Eisbein” (knee pork) and “Linguiça Recheada com Queijo” (Sausage with Cheese). My suggestion, don't go to the Baden Baden at the lunchtime, because it's crowded. I'd rather go about 3pm or 4pm.

Rostie Restaurant: Have you ever eaten rostie potato? I will try describe it for you: think in a grate potato, make one ball with this and fill it with cheese, sausage, onion, bacon, etc (they have many options to fill it). Damn it, It's so good! Well….I like potato anyway :)

Só Queijo Restaurant – a charming restaurant, they won the premium “Excellence Certificate” by TripAdvisor. In this place you can find several fondue and wines. This location is crowded as well, then go early if you want eat lunch there. Campos do Jordão has a lot of places with fondue and wines menu, then if you prefer one place more empty, just walk around the city (this city is small) and you will find another place crowdless.

Montanhês – would you like a hot chocolate? Stop at the Montanhes! It's not that expensive and the chocolate are delicious. If you don't like chocolate very much, please give a try, I think you'll like it! They have a store and you can buy chocolates as a gift.

Pizza ao Quadrado Restaurant – the last time that I went to Campos do Jordão, I went to this place. It's cheap and I think you should give a shot. This is not the best pizza ever, but it's worth it.

These places above are the more known in Campos do Jordão, but you can explore the city centre, because there are too many options, several bars and restaurants to visit.

Teleférico (chair lift): with the teleférico, you can reach the top of the Morro do Elefante. It's beautiful and the principal attraction in the city.

Bicycle, tricycle, quadbike rentals - When you arrive in the city, you can look for these tours, or make a booking on the Passeios da Natureza, they are the finest people and has a good service and the best price. If you rent a quadbike, you can make turns to your wife, son, etc, because the tour is long and both will drive enough. I drove quadbike twice, one day was sunny and another one was rainny, and both were amazing!

Ride a horse/ poney – next to Teleférico (chair lift), you can find the horses to rent. I don't remember the company's name, but it's easy to find.

What about the hotels? I've never slept in Campos do Jordão, but you can find hotels on the TripAdvisor. They have a list of the best hotels.

Campos do Jordão is nice on the Summer or Winter, then you can enjoy all the year. The city is between mountains, then in the day is warm and the night is chilly. Tip: in the Summer the city is less crowded than Winter. Another nice time to visit it on Christmas (December), the city is beautiful with lights hanging on trees and decorations in the houses.
